http://www.drafthelp.com/MLB_BallsInPlay.htm FOR THE FULL STORY CHECK OUT THIS LINK
Balls In Play Average, or BIP, measures what a batters average is in at bats in which they hit the ball.
Let’s take Jim Thome as an example.
Jim Thome is batting .285 this year (372 AB with 106 hits) with 109 K.
372 AB- 109 K= 263 AB
106 HITS/263 AB= .403
Therefore his BIP average is .403.

Ray,
I don't understand the benefit of this stat over batting average or OBP, or actually what this stat shows at all with respect to the hitter. Doesn't this reflect on defense of the opposing teams more than the individual player's hitting ability?
I only ask because I find it very odd that there's any kind of batting ranking out there with Bonds lower on the list than Melvin Mora.
Hi again Ray,
I read the full story link you posted and I still don't understand. The article doesn't really explain what this stat would reveal. Maybe you could clarify a bit more.
I'm a Cubs fan, so I've seen a lot of strikeouts over the years (Dave Kingman, Jose "K" Hernandez, and especially Sosa). As I described on my blog (http://buhbyesosa.blogspot.com), a player could get 0 BB, 179 Ks, 1 hit out of 180 ABs and have a BIP of 1. Another player could have 120 walks, 30K, 30 H, 60AB and have a BIP of 1. That's two radically different hitters at the plate. What does BIP reveal about these two? Thanks..
